The Club and Our Aim
Founded in 1867, Glasgow University Boat Club is one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting institutions in Scotland. The club continues to compete at the highest levels on a domestic and international level. In recent years, the club has undergone a revival. Crews compete at Henley Women’s Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta and individuals have been selected for Home International Regatta (Scotland Team) and GB U23’s. The aim of our club is to support our member’s goals, whether that may be to complete their first 2km race or medal at BUCS we cater for all.
The 2017/18 season saw Glasgow crews having one of their most successful seasons to date. Our Men’s squad placed a record 39th at HoRR and reached the Champ 8+ Men’s final at BUCS before competing at HRR. Our Women had an equally successful season highlighted by the quarter finals at Henley Women’s. As a squad we continue to hold titles as Scottish Champions as well as produced 3 rowers that competed at Home International Regatta 2018 (Scotland Team).
Rowing at the University of Glasgow is on an upward trajectory continuing to grow membership numbers with 230 for the 2017/18 season. The club also has a rapidly growing social media presence with a combined 3500 followers across our social media platforms. Spectacles such as The Scottish Boat Race and British University Championships draw in larger crowds and greater media interest every year. As a business that’s more students showcasing and representing your brand on campus, throughout the country and worldwide online.
Henley Royal Regatta, in which we prequalified this season, has become a global media event, streamed live on BT Sport and YouTube, this allows thousands of people to access the spectacle. Domestically, support and publicity for the Scottish Boat Race increased dramatically in recent years as BBC Scotland, BBC Alba, STV and Scottish broadsheets have all previously covered the events which unfolded on the Clyde.
Our famous Naked Calendar hit the streets every year. The calendar was a huge success, selling 400 copies in 2016 and placing 2nd in The University Papers’ National Competition in 2017. This generated a surge of publicity for our previous sponsoring partners, Athlete Focused, and supported our Charity Partner, The Beatson Cancer Charity. We look to continue our partnership with Beatson Cancer Charity and are looking for new sponsors for the 2018 calendar!
Rowing as a sport is on the rise with Glasgow University Boat Club at the forefront. The cost for this has been supported by our members and alumni. Travel to high profile events and specialist equipment to facilitate our clubs competitive outlook are our major expenses. Showcase your brand on oars, boats, kit, social media, formal events and much more.
